Your Tackle:

use the right gear

Use tackle that is legal and reduces the risk of damage

Hooks & Line

Use a strong leader or line so your fish can be brought to the net quickly.

Hooks must be barbless or debarbed (fully crushed with a pair of pliers). It is illegal to use a barbed hook to fish for salmon.

Only single hooks are allowed on spinners.

The gape for hooks on spinners, spoons

or plugs must be 13mm or less.

Flies

Use small single or double hooked flies. They do less damage and make unhooking easier. A size 6 or smaller hook, with a gape of 10mm or less, is recommended.

To fish a large fly, use a tube fly fitted with a small single or double hook.

If you do use a treble hook on your fly, it must not have a gape of more than 7mm.

Spinners, Spoons & Plugs

Only single (not double or treble) hooks are allowed on spoons, spinners or plugs, though plugs may have up to three single hooks.

Hook gapes must be 13mm or less.

The above restrictions apply to Welsh and cross border rivers. Always be aware of and follow byelaws wherever you fish.
